Hi, my name is Saeed Ahmed Saeed al-Mureikhi, I was born in the Emirates in the city of Abu Dhabi on the 25th of May in 1985, so that makes me 23 now. I have 3 brothers and 4 sisters so that makes us 10 with my father and mother.

I joined the Media Studies because I love photography to do with advertising and I like to take photos of individuals and various kinds of cars from unused angles. One thing in particular what interests me is to capture a shot which can convey a message. I like Graphic Design too, and what inspired me about it is that I used to draw a lot when I was young.

In my free time I love to hang out with some friends and go out cruising alone in my car listening to all kinds of music. My favorite films are many action and comedy movies. If I had the chance to drive on a racing track would love to do that. I drive in a very bad way to extend that I close my eyes and imagine myself in a racing track, trying to beat up normal cars that have nothing to do with speed. None of my friends wants to get in the car when I'm the driver.

The purpose of this blog is to explore the subject of global warming. This will be done by watching videos of spokespeople, writing reports and cause\effect, problem\solution and argument type pieces of writing and finally by doing an oral presentation.

Task 2 - Introduction to Global Warming

Nature can be affected by a variety of natural phenomena which can include natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and volcanic eruptions. The one which will be the focus of the following will on the subject of global warming. In the following, I am going to outline some causes which have led to climate change and also consider some effects.

Let's now take a look at some causes. One major factor which has led to an increase in climate change is the emission of carbon gases. To clarify, these man-made emissions of carbon dioxide are the result of fumes that come from the exhaust of vehicles such as cars, trucks, airplanes and factories. The emission of these green gases are in essence heat-trapping gases which in turn can trigger an increase in temperature. In this vein, the knock on effect of the rise in temperature led to a drought, doubling the rate at which trees die off from one percent to two percent, in the Amazon in 2005. Subsequently, instead of being able to convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into solid carbon, kept locked in the trunks of rain forest trees for centuries, the deforestation process unraveled and more carbon dioxide was emitted than was absorbed.

Having looked at some causes, we'll now consider some effects. For starters, there is widespread agricultural failure due to drought. Another consequence to take note of is worldwide sea level rise. This rise could lead to people losing their homes especially those who live near the coast. Furthermore, it has been reported that countless species are extinct or will be extinct. Affected species include Edith's checker spot butterfly and the red fox. Polar bears, walruses and some seals are on their way to extinction.

To sum up, some thing has to be done to minimize the effect of the conditions leading to climate changes so to also minimize the onset of the various results of this global issue.

Task 3 - An Inconvenient Truth: Part 1

Al Gore, the host, was the vice president in the Clinton administration it first took an interest in climate change in grade school and has continued to do so as a politician. In his discussion he highlights the relationship between the emission of carbon dioxide and an increase in temperature and the ensuring effects.

Let’s look at some of the major results of global warming around the world according to Gore’s presentation. Some of the global warming result is the climate change and this change is result of increase of greenhouse gases and that may lead in near future to increase the earth temperature every year also the Co2 amount will change if the human keep doing the same thing. As result of these changes there is some bad effects on plant, one of these effects is the increasing of the temperature which will help to melt the south pole and this ice cubes pieces will increase the sea level, thousands city’s will disappear under the water and millions of people will killed and the others will not have place to live. Al Gore’s end his presentation with some suggestions that will help to reduce global warming, this can be done by releasing less Co2 and do some planting that will help to recover the environment to safe level.


To sum up, Al Gore says that although the situation regarding global warming appear dire he does speak passionately looking forward to the future with hope his presentation concludes with parting nuggets of practical advice as to how man can play a role in curbing climate change.

Task 4 - An Inconvenient Truth Part 2

The global warming has a lot of great impact on our planet. It warn people of the dangerous of global warming, and show them by some pictures how the world will look after few years. In this essay I am will write about two reviews that I found about the global warming movie which is called "An Inconvenient Truth". One of the reviews is giving positive points about the movie while the other one is shows us the negative points.

First I will start with the positive points about Al Gore's movie. One of the good points that the writer talks about is that the science is laid out flawlessly. Unlike some environmentalists. He never cosily assumes that we're with him in accepting the theory, and instead lays out the evidence piece by comprehensible piece to build to a conclusion that hard to fault. Another good point is that he presents saving the planet as a moral, cross-party, worldwide issue rather than casting stones at the current US administration. Other good point is that he is not to say that the film is flawless. "An Inconvenient Truth" is conveniently soft on its examination of the Clinton-Gore administration’s less than glowing record on the environment, trumpeting Gore’s achievements in office rather than saying the laws which led to an explosion in the popularity of gas-guzzling SUVs.

Turning to the other review which is negative points where the writer wrote several points about the movie. One of the points is that the writer said that the movie was talking about Al Gore and his life more than the main subject which is the global warming. Other point is that he was still present in the movie are the jokes against Bush and other Republicans. Another point is that the writer says that Al Gore shows many pictures and evidences of global warming effects on the nature, but he never proved that the picture are real or not.

To sum up, in my opinion, I think that Al Gore's movie is good movie and it helps us to understand the real situation and to take it seriously by saving our planet.

Task 5 - Carbon footprint

There are various ways to measure our impact on the earth from an environmental stand point. One of these ways is by way of our carbon footprint. In the following report I will define what a carbon footprint is. Show how a carbon footprint is measured. Show how I rank in comparison to other and finally I’ll make some suggestions as to how we can reduce our carbon footprints.

Let's see at how best to define what a carbon foot print is. A carbon footprint is means of measuring our activities on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation. (Carbon footprint)

There are steps on how to measure our carbon footprint. First of all, we need to find out what our CO2 emissions by gathering our utility bills, car mileage, and air travel miles from last year. Then, we try to find websites that calculates our emissions or simply just use a CO2 calculator. www.footprint.wwf.org.uk and www.myfootprint.org are recommended websites for calculating our CO2 emissions. After calculating our CO2 emissions the following rank appears. My rank is 2.055 and compared to my classmates am ranked 3rd. The one who ranked first is Mohamed Al Sulmi with 2.78, and then comes after him Mohamed Al Khameeri with 2.62. After that comes Shkboot with 2.01, and finally comes Abdulla Al Obaidli with 1.8, now ranking my self to my country I have a low rank compared to my country the UAE rank is 4.5.

I am going to give 10 ways on how to reduce our carbon footprint. The first one is to turning off the light of the room when no one is in. Secondly we should use electricity instead of gas when cooking. Third, we should dry our clothes under the sun instead of using the drying machine. Fourth, we should try to eliminate the use of heating water while taking our daily showers. Fifth, we should try to wash the dishes manually instead of using a dishwasher machine. Sixth, we should walk more often instead of using a car if the distance is a short one. Seventh, we can always wash our clothes with normal water; we don’t have to use heated water. Eighth, we can invest in an Energy Management System. Ninth, we can reduce the thermostat on our water heater to 120 degrees. Finally, we should always unplug our electronic devices if we aren’t going to use them. (Leo)

In conclusion we should all at least understand our carbon footprint and the impact on our planet, because everything we do causes global warming and effects our environment. So, calculate your carbon footprint and try to reduce it.

Task 6 - Cool Cities

Since the start of the Industrial Revolution, several environmental problems appeared. There is a solution for our environmental problems in which cool cities are developed in more that one country to stop the global warming (Gulf news). In my blog, I will discuss how the contribution to global warming is happening in modern cities. Also, I will discuss the suitable solutions in which how to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. At the end, I will include my opinion about this subject.
I will start with discussing the problems that help modern cities to contribute to global warming. One of the problems is the increase of green house emissions and this increase effected the industrialization and population growth (Global Issues). There are some human activities that helped the increasing of emissions, like for example: the burning of oil and the coal has a bad effect on the environment. One more reason is the overuse of the natural resources (Global Issues). For example, building modern cities and the use of transportation, increases carbon emission; this has a huge and bad effect on the environment.
Earlier, I discussed the problems. Now I’ll give solutions to the problems mentioned before. One of the solutions is having cool cities. This will help in the reduction of carbon emission because it uses alternative energy (Cool Cities). For example, we can use hydride cars and monorails for transportation inside the city. Also, we can use echo towers which will help to reduce the emission percentage to half of its amount (Hope). In addition we can use echo residents to reduce 30% of the emissions. Moreover, we can always use filter lights in the city, which will reduce the heat flow (Salama).
Concluding the above mentioned points, I think that there are many cool cities in the whole world that will help reduce the carbon emissions. We, as human beings, have to develop these techniques that will help to clean the earth from the emissions, which will result in a having a nice and clear air to live in.

Task 7 - A problem-solution report

There are many types of issues to be considered in our world today. One of the most existing issues is the topic of Global Warming. In the following report, I will be discussing the major causes of climate change. Then I will be examining some solutions to reduce this problem. Finally, I will present a vision of the future.

The Planet earth is fundamentally different from other planets in the solar system because of the atmosphere that surrounds it (Global warming basics 1). In other words, the atmosphere protects the living creatures to live on planet earth because of the shape and orientation of its orbit around the sun (Global Climate 1). What affect the atmosphere are the causes of pollutant emissions, like forest fires, volcanoes and industrial burning. The industrial affect is caused by humans, for example in burning fossil fuels, such as oil, coal or natural gases. These are not the only problems that could result in global warming. Another problem is the rising of the sea-level that is caused by the process of melting the Arctic ice cap. This results in a huge flood of the low lying coastal areas and cities (Lerner 2). Another issue of global warming is the increase of temperature by the forest fires that produces the increase of dioxide level. Therefore, small changes in temperature can create an enormous affect to the environment (Global Warming: Problems and Solutions 1).

There are many ways to reduce the affect of global warming on the environment. The basic thing to do is to educate the uneducated people about the affect that is caused from global warming. Many countries around the world don’t take any action on this issue; therefore starting a campaign is a great example for the uneducated people to understand the effects of global warming. Another way of reducing the effect of global warming is to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. This can happen by taking the measurement of the carbon foot print and calculating the average and try to change the people's living life cycle. For example, people can use the public transportation or go walking instead of riding their cars everyday to work (shah 2). Another solution is that we could generalize the use of the existing technologies for building car cleaners and modernize electricity generators. This could happen by creating a new building system for cool cities (Lerner 2). For example, like Masdar city; it will encourage people in the future to live in it. By recycling and reducing the amount of electricity used at home, this could result in a supportive effect to the issue of global warming.

In my conclusion, I would like to say that making a small change in our daily lives can create a massive difference for our future. Everyone in this world should participate in working together and find the best and most effective solutions to overcome this global warming effect.

Lebanon Task

Lebanon is a country that is located in the Middle East region. It’s the land of milk and honey that’s what it’s called in the bible. The capital of Lebanon is Beirut which is also known as Paris of the east. Shakira is the famous yet beautiful half Lebanese singer, she is known everywhere around the world. Syria, Turkey, Jordan, Cyprus, and Palestine and the five countries that surround Lebanon.
Lebanon became independence from France in the year 1943. That made the tension between Muslims and Christians, because they both wanted power, but then the Christians took the power and the Muslims had minimum control over Lebanon. 1975 was the year that the tension reached the peak. What happened was the Christians killed Palestinians civilians in a bus. The results were killing them and taking revenge.
In 1982, the Israeli army took control of the city with the aim of removing the Palestinians liberation organization. On the other hand, Lebanese leaders signed a peace deal in 1989 that offers an equal right between Christians and Muslims. The human and economic cost conflict was bad. Around 200000 people died and 25 percent of the population had left the country.
Some signs that helped the recovery of Beirut’s social and economic country were the Stands on the Cornich, and Beirut’s seafront promenade. However, there are current problems in Lebanon, for example young people have left the country, and there are many people who aren’t employed.

Conflict Diamond Task

Diamonds are the most precious stone in the world. Have you ever through of how they get from the earth to onto your fiancés finger? I will now describe important locations along the trade rout these most valuable of rocks pass.

Even The Jewish are diamond trader .In the city of Antwerp 80% of the world’s rough diamonds still passed and there are About 1,500 cutters and polishers left after traders a lot of the cutting and polishing to India. India is one of the most important countries for diamonds. 90% of the world’s rough diamonds are cut and polished there and workers are paid 40 cents for each gem they cut and polish. One of the gulf countries, Dubai, has a growing reputation as a diamond hub. The government attracts diamond traders by great deals such as 50 year zero tax holidays. As a result this diamond business grown to be worth nearly £1 billion there.

In conclusion, diamonds go under many steps to be manufactured in different countries so it’s very expensive and hard to get by everyone.
